DNA Project

The MacLellan Trees Project has our very own genealogy system database with input from member who have personally assembled there family tree and submitted for cross referencing with other member in conjunction with the DNA Project.

The project has been established to study the genealogical DNA lineages of Clan MacLellan and those that have a surname etymology related to Mac-a-ghilledhiolan   ( i.e. The Son of the Bastard - MacLolane ) or Giolla Fhaoláin ( i.e. Servant of St. Fillan ).

About The MacLellan Ancestry Project

The MacLellan Ancestry Project began in 2014 with a DNA test at Family Tree DNA and the results told a story that would unfolded over the next 8 years it would unveiled a rich history of knights, castles, wars, betrayal, murder and the rise of Lord Kirkcudbright and the slow down fall of this noble family of Galloway. Through members genealogies and DNA participants we have discovered 5 distinct Haplogroups in 380 participating individuals.

    We need more Big-Y volunteers.

Clan Maclellan

Welcome to Clan MacLellan. Our objective is to provide a focal point for all members of Clan MacLellan, and to promote kinship between MacLellan’s. We encourage the study and research into traditions, our Scottish heritage, and our MacLellan history. We are a society composed of MacLellan’s of various spellings and variations. These include a wide variety as you can see on our spellings page. If you are descended from, or are married to a MacLellan of any spelling, then you are one of us. We are all cousins, and we are pleased you are here. Our name has evolved from the Gaelic. The spelling form "MacLellan" was chosen as our clan name because the castle at Kirkcudbright has this spelling. Scottish history also uses this spelling most often in referring to the Lords Kirkcudbright and other knights bearing the name in Galloway, particularly the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright.

Our Clan Motto is "Think On".

ALL DONE

Basically we collect genetic data and genealogy data and try to aline DNA SMP’s with dates and records within the genealogy information members have submitted. This group has been established to study the genealogical DNA lineages of Clan MacLellan and those that have a surname etymology related to Mac-a-ghilledhiolan ( i.e. The Son of the Bastard - MacLolane ) or Giolla Fhaoláin ( i.e. Servant of St. Fillan ).

The primary goal of the MacLellan Ancestry Project is to find the common surname progenitor for each Y-DNA cluster of men who carry a version of the MacLellan/McClellan/d surname variants.  Y-DNA surname projects like this, allow us to build a phylogenetic tree of men's direct paternal lineage since the Y-chromosome is passed down from father to son completely intact without any DNA contributed from the mother.   Each time there is a mutation on the Y-chromosome it will be passed down to every generation of males that follows.  We can use these mutations to build a tree and see which MacLellans share a surname progenitor.  We can even find DNA mutation branches within the various MacLellan trees.  Y-DNA also allows us to see where other surnames branch from MacLellans, this helps build a more comprehensive picture of common origins.  For the best results two tester are needed, example; son & father or brother & brother or son & uncle or father & grandson or uncle & grandson, all must have the same surname and be related by blood..

Personally, I have tested my son, my older brother and my grandson of same older brother. Other members of different families who all share a common ancestor at a documented date of 1705 who having 5 sons who descendants survive to the present day, a few have participated in Big-Y testing.
